Autumn Sniffles and Coughs

Today, September 22, is the first day of autumn!  I love this time of year.  When I think of fall, I think of pumpkins, scarecrows, caramel apples and the beautiful change of weather.  However, the change in weather can also bring on the sniffles and coughs.  As a matter of fact, my youngest is dealing with a runny nose and cough.  So, I thought I'd share some of the products that help my little ones during this time of year!

For the sniffles, Boogie Wipes  are a must.  These saline wipes are way better then tissue and won't irritate the delicate skin around your nose.  Boogie Wipes are in my home as a staple baby/toddler item and are regularly used for any nasal ailment.  From allergy related runny noses, to the common cold and nasal congestion, Boogie Wipes are a lifesaver and a must-have for your home.  Boogie Wipes come in four scents: Fresh, Grape, Minty Menthol or Simply Unscented.  Boogie Wipes retail for $3.99 and are available at Wal-Mart, Target and Babies 'R Us. Visit www.BoogieWipes.com to download a $.50 off coupon!  With cold and flu season upon us, be sure to stock-up!

Another one of my favorite products for the sniffles is a humidifier.  Keeping the air moist can really help relieve the stuffy noses.   If you don't have one yet, run out and get one today!   When we start running the heat this autumn and winter, the air in our homes becomes extremely dry.   The dryness can actually cause your nasal passages to over produce mucus which can lead to uncomfortable and irritating congestion.  Besides providing relief from cold symptoms, humidifiers also help relieve dry, itchy skin and chapped lips.  This adorable humidifier is from Crane and is available at Babies 'R Us.  The Elephant Cool Mist Humidifier retails for $44.99.

Another relief for the sniffles and nasal congestion is using a saline spray and nasal aspirator.  I use Baby Simply Saline for my little ones and it really helps moisturize their nasal passages.  Using a saline spray will also help loosen those yucky boogers before you use a nasal aspirator so that you're little one can easily breathe!  Any brand of saline spray will work just fine, but I prefer ones with a gentle mist as it seems to be tolerated well by little ones.  Baby Simply Saline  is available at Babies 'R Us fand retails for $5.99.

Now, my youngest little one absolutely dreads the nasal aspirator bulb, but it works wonders!  However, I've heard many mommas rave about the Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator.  I haven't tried the Nosefrida yet, but it looks rather interesting.  The Nosefrida has a mouth-operated design and you simply position the tube near baby's nostril, put the red mouthpiece in your mouth and apply gentle suction. The Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator is available at Babies 'R Us and retails for $16.99.

Many times, sniffles are accompanied by a cough.  Coughs can be not only uncomfortable, but can keep your little ones up all night. If you child is over 2-years old, try a teaspoon full of honey before bed.   The honey will act as a natural cough suppressant and can help you get through the night peacefully.   Another great option for treating a cough is Zarbees Natural Cough Syrup.   Zarbees has two great formulas.   Zarbee's Nightime Cough Syrup is recommended for children 2-years and older and is available in a grape flavor.  Zarbees Natural Cough Syrup is recommended for children 12+ months and is available in cherry and grape flavors.  I'll be honest, the grape tastes way better then then cherry!  My toddlers would agree, too.  All of the Zarbees products are drug-free, so you don't have to worry about unwanted side effects and grogginess of alcohol, dyes or glutens.  Zarbees Natural Cough Syrups are available at Wal-Mart and retail for $8.99.  Visit www.zarbees.com for samples and money-saving coupons.

And lastly, but definitely not least, is the most important suggestion... Cuddles.  Cuddles from momma will always make your little one feel better.  Well, I hope some of these products and suggestions are helpful!  Hoping you have a healthy fall and winter season!
