Got Fluff. Now What?

So, yesterday I received a "fluff" package from Cotton Babies!  Who needs a "care" package when you can receive a "fluff" package?  I was super excited when I checked the mail and ran inside to tear the package open. I was like a kid ripping into a present on Christmas morning.  Wait, I still do that with gifts sometimes.  Well, moving on, I received five bumGenius cloth diapers.  The prints are part of the Artist Series called the Tiny Socialite Collection and are designed by Chelsea Perry.  I just love them.  They're cute, but still edgy.  I just thought of a new word.  "Cudgy" for cute and edgy.  Think that will catch on, perhaps?  Maybe?  Well, you never know!

Well, I wasn't for sure what to do with these diapers.  First, I closely examined them.  Honestly, the snaps kind of freaked me out.  There are snaps on the top and snaps in the front.  After checking out some videos on You Tube, I quickly figured out those pesky snaps.  The hook/loop closure closely resemble the Velcro on a disposable diaper and are super easy to use and maneuver.  I was able to speak with a live customer service representative on the Cotton Babies web site who provided me with some extremely helpful tips for cleaning and washing the cloth diapers.  So, the first order of business was washing my new cloth diapers.  I recently purchased Charlie's Soap from Booty Duty Cloth Diapers to wash my cloth diapers.  In case you didn't know, main-stream, store-bought detergents are not cloth diaper safe.  I washed the diapers covers and inserts.  Now, the diaper covers had to be line dried, while the diaper inserts could be tumbled dry on low.  Day 1 of my cloth diapering adventures was over.

Stay tuned for my follow-up blog when I chronicle my first day of cloth diapering!

P.S. - If you're in the Tulsa area, please check out Tulsa's newest cloth diapering store, Booty Duty Cloth Diapers.  Booty Duty Cloth Diapers is still in their infant stages, but show them support as they grow and serve Tulsa's cloth diapering mommas!

Boogie Wipes Review and Giveaway!

Last April, both my of little ones had RSV.  I was silly to think that RSV was only around during the fall and winter months.  You know, during cold and flu season.  It was a tough couple of weeks having two little ones under two-years old sick with RSV.  Hardly anyone slept, fevers were up and down and overall discomfort ran rampid.  Both of my boys had super runny noses and I was constantly wiping snot from their noses.  I had used Boogie Wipes in the past, but with the boys having RSV, I stocked up and was using Boogie Wipes exclusively on their little red noses rather then facial tissue.  The Boogie Wipes, along with regular saline spray and suction, helped with the RSV nasal symptoms.  Since then, Boogie Wipes are in my home as a staple baby/toddler item and are regularly used for any nasal ailment.  From allergy related runny noses, to the common cold and nasal congestion, Boogie Wipes are a lifesaver and a must-have for your home!

Boogie Wipes come in four scents: Fresh, Grape, Minty Menthol or Simply Unscented.  You can purchase Boogie Wipes at Wal-Mart, Target, Babies 'R Us and other fine retailers.  Visit www.BoogieWipes.com to search for a retailer in your area!

There are some new and exciting happenings right now at Boogie Wipes, too!  Here's the low-down.
  • NEW 90-Count Boogie Wipes canisters are available now!  Look for them at retailers like Toys 'R Us and Target!
  • This summer, Boogie Wipes is looking for 3 Extraordinary Kids to be featured on their Fresh, Grape and Unscented canisters, during the 2012 cough and cold season.  Boogie Wipes began taking Extraordinary Kid contest submissions, on August 1, 2011.  For more information and official rules, please visit: www.BoogieWipes.com or www.SaveTheSleeve.com.
  • The Boogie Wipes on-going promotion is called Save The Sleeve!  It’s a fun, interactive way for kids to learn to put their boogies in a Boogie Wipe and not on their sleeves!  You can learn more at www.SaveTheSleeve.com
  • SALINE SOOTHERS are new saline nose wipes for more mature noses (AKA teenagers and adults!) and are available NOW in retailers.  For a list of retailers and a peek at the fun Saline Soothers video, please visit www.SalineSoothers.com

Betty... My Mom.

Today, August 26th, is my mom's birthday.  My mom is named Betty Jo although many now call her BJ for short.  She's an amazing woman.  Kind-hearted, generous, gracious, Jesus-loving, sweet, fabulous are just a few of the numerous adjectives that describe my mom.  I'm so blessed to have her as my mother.  She's my friend and confidant.  Happy Birthday, mom!  Psst... I won't reveal your age, mom.  Although, I think if a woman ever lies about her age, she should add a few years.  So, if you're turning 30, let's say, then tell people you're 37.  People will be dying to know your beauty trade secrets!  By the way, I'm 37.  Wink, wink.

So, tomorrow, my mom, sister and I will be participating in the Walk To End Alzheimer's in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Oral Roberts University campus.  This will be our first year to participate and our small team of four raised a good amount of money for the Alzheimer's Association in a short amount of time.  We're participating in the 5K in honor of my my mom's mother, Sylvia Kelly.  We affectionately called her "Granny."  Last night, I wrote a note on Facebook entitled "Whose 'Betty' Are You?"  It's a little something written about my mom and my Granny.  I thought I'd share it with you.  So, without further ado...

"Whose 'Betty' Are You?"

This Saturday, I'll be participating in the Walk To End Alzheimer's.  My sister, mom and I have been raising money for the Alzheimer's Association.  This is a very personal endeavor as my Granny (my mom's mother), Sylvia Kelly, was a victim of this horrid disease.  It was devastating to see her slip away and to witness her mental capacity diminish.  My mom was her caretaker for three years.  It was hard work.  It was exhausting.  It was emotionally draining.  My Granny had completely forgotten who we were.  My Granny didn't even recognize her own daughter.  This realization was especially difficult for my mom.  However, my mom was determined to give my Granny the best possible care.

My Granny had broken her hip and of course needed to stay off of it in order for her hip to properly heal.  However, my Granny would forget about her broken hip, get up to walk and of course then fall.  The doctor informed my mom that it was necessary for my Granny to be restrained.  It was a gut-wrenching decision as my mom hated to have to restrain my Granny.  My Granny would cry and plead with my mom to untie her.  "What did I do wrong?  Why are you doing this to me?"  Those words pierced my mom's heart.  It was heart breaking because my Granny simply didn't understand.  Or rather she would just forget the reasoning.  My mom couldn't have my Granny breaking or fracturing any other bones and as tough as this decision was, it was imperative for my Granny's overall health and safety.

One day my Granny was having a particular rough time.  I remember her looking at my mom.  My Granny clearly said, "Please call my daughter Betty.  I know she will come and get me.  She will take care of me."  There was silence and an obvious lump in my mom's throat.  Gosh, even as I write this, I'm getting the same lump in my throat.  My Granny was riddled with Alzheimer's and she didn't recognize that her caretaker was in fact her daughter Betty.  It was a bittersweet moment.  My mom was proud to know that even in such a dark mental state, my Granny knew who she could depend on.  My Granny knew who would be the one to take care of her.  It was just sad that my Granny didn't realize that her Betty had in deed come through for her after-all.

So, my question to you, is "Whose 'Betty' Are You?"  Who knows that you're their champion?  Who knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that you're the one who'll be there for them?  "Whose 'Betty' Are You?"

Happy Monday!

Hope all of you had an amazing weekend and are having a great Monday!  For many of you, today marked the first day of school!  I pray your kiddos had a safe and fun day!

Today it's been kind of a cloudy day with lower temperatures.  87 degrees is a welcomed "cold front" compared to the 110+ temperature days that we had recently been contending with this month.  The good ole Oklahoma humidity is still sticking around though and it was definitely noticeable when I checked the mail this afternoon.  I was excited because today I received my Race For The Cure packet in the mail!  My race shirt, race number and other race information had arrived!  I'm participating in the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure on September 17, 2011, and will be running the 5K this year.  My last Race For The Cure was back in 2008 when I was pregnant with my first son.  Hopefully, I'm not too rusty!  I'm hoping you'll consider supporting my efforts by visiting my donation page.  Every donation is a blessing and a few dollars from many people can sure add up fast!  Please visit my fundraising page and consider donating to an awesome organization.

I'm also participating in the 2011 Walk To End Alzheimer's on August 27, 2011, this Saturday!  My mom, sister and I are doing this walk in remembrance of my Granny, Sylvia Kelly, who was a victim of Alzheimer's.   So far our fundraising efforts have been great and I'd be appreciative of you support for this endeavor as well.  Please visit my fundraising page to help us reach our goal!

Thanks for the support!!!

Toni Versus Meringue

Yesterday, I had the honor of being featured as a Guest Blogger on the blog Mommy Of Two Little Monkeys.  I wrote a piece about Fluff.  You can read my Guest Blog posting here.

So, when I think of the word Fluff  I think of meringue.  After writing my Guest Blog piece, I instantly had a hankering for a meringue pie.  Lemon meringue, coconut meringue, it didn't matter.  Speaking of meringue, I have a funny pie story to share.  It was my first face-off with meringue.  Maybe some of you can relate.

So, about 4 years ago, I wanted to bake my mom her favorite pie for Mother's Day.  My mom LOVES Coconut Meringue Pie.  I went to the store and bought all of the ingredients for making her favorite pie.  I was super excited as I wasn't too domesticated at the time and this was one of my first attempts at making something from scratch.  Well, pretty much from scratch.  I did buy a frozen pie crust.  As I began trying to make the meringue, I was having the most awful time.  I kept getting yolk in the egg whites and would then start the process over.  Thank goodness I bought two dozen eggs.  I used every single one.  Sad, but true.  So, I finally got all of the egg whites in the bowl.  Thank you, Lord!  I turned on the mixer expecting the egg whites to make the most marvelous peaks.  Nothing.  My husband even Googled "tips for making meringue."

Step in, Andy, my husband.  How many people does it take to make meringue?  Well, in our case, two.  At long last, the meringue was perfectly peaked and looked just heavenly.  I had already made the pie filling and added it to the pie crust.  It was warm as I poured it into the pie crust.  I then topped the pie with the fabulous meringue.  Perfection.  I baked the finished pie in the oven for the designated time, around 12-15 minutes or until the coconut on top was lightly browned.  I proudly removed the pie from the oven and we headed to my mom's house for Mother's Day lunch.  When it was time for dessert, I presented my creation to my mom.  My mom looked at the pie and smiled.  She then asked me how long I baked it.  I thought it was a funny question and told her that the pie baked for about 15 minutes until the coconut on top was lightly browned.  My mom then asked me if that was the only "baking" the pie did.  I was getting a little confused as I didn't know what she was getting at.  She finally asked if I had pre-baked the pie crust prior to baking the finished pie.  I was a deer caught in headlights.  What was she talking about?  There was no mention of pre-baking the pie crust from the allrecipes.com recipe I had found.  Whatever did she mean?  Upon further inspection of the pie, we discovered that it was a doughy, gooey, unbaked mess underneath the magnificent meringue.  Since the pie crust wasn't pre-baked, the pie filling baked into the dough and was a disaster.  I was crushed.  All of this work for nothing.  My mom laughed and began to scoop the meringue off the pie.  She ate a spoonful of the meringue and savored the bite.  "Well, at least your meringue turned out," she said.  And thank goodness it did!

Happy Saturday!  Have a safe, fun weekend!

Morning Coffee, Fluffy Bums and Jennifer Labit

How did you spend your Saturday morning? I spent mine having coffee at Starbucks, talking about fluffy bums and meeting Jennifer Labit!  Jennifer is the creator of bumGenius, Flip and Econobum cloth diapers.  She and her husband are the owners of Cotton Babies in Saint Louis, Missouri.  Jennifer treated six other moms and I to our fav Starbuck's beverage.
The morning weather was beautiful in Tulsa yesterday and it was nice to sit outside without melting in the first two minutes.  Wait, I really meant first two seconds.  The Oklahoma summer heat has been brutal this year, with temps reaching 115 degrees!  Anyhow, I'm not a cloth diapering momma, but I've been following Jennifer's Facebook page for over a year now.  She's such a smart and savvy business woman, and I was honored to have the opportunity to meet her on a personal level.  I've also been curious about cloth diapering.  I'd like to dip my toe in the water and see what it's all about, and I'll now have the opportunity as Jennifer is having Cotton Babies send us a FREE diaper!

Jennifer also mentioned the Cotton Babies Change 3 Things Challenge.  If you visit the Cotton Babies web site, you can purchase a 3-pack of cloth diapers to join the challenge.  Commit to using 3 cloth diapers a day instead of disposables for 1 year.  Change you, your baby, & your planet.  When you change your BABY's diaper, YOU create a new habit, save money and prevent unnecessary waste on your PLANET.

I hope all of you "Chic Mommas" are having a fabulous weekend!  The boys and I are heading to birthday party at lunchtime, so it will be a fun day!  Happy Sunday!

How Low Can You Go?

No, we're not going to play virtual limbo, but wouldn't that be fun?  I'm imagining myself on a beach at a luau, wearing a beautiful lei and getting ready for the limbo.  However, it's not beach limbo time, it’s Toxic Limbo time!  Sing with us, “All around the natural world, gonna get the toxins out!”  How low can YOU go when it comes to safe, natural personal care products?  Take the Earth Mama Angel Baby How Low Can You Go Challenge to find out!

Here’s The Challenge:
Gather some of the most common pregnancy and baby care products you use regularly on your pregnant body or on your baby. You can include shampoo, lotions, soaps, diaper cream, stretch mark oil, hemorrhoid cream, etc.  Go to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ Skin Deep database and enter a product name in the search field (for example, Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash). Look for the Hazard Score for that product. The Hazard Score tells you the toxicity rating: 0 is lowest, 10 the most toxic. Click the product if you want to see specifically which ingredients add up to create that score. If your product isn’t listed, ask yourself why.  Is there something in the ingredients list that the company might not want you to see?  If your product isn’t listed, you can enter individual ingredients to check their toxicity rating.
Add up the Skin Deep toxicity rating for all the personal care products that you use on a daily basis on your pregnant or nursing body, or on your baby, to find out what your score is. Then answer these questions.

1. What was your Skin Deep toxicity rating score?
2. Were you surprised with the score and/or ingredients?
3. What would you like your score to be?

Don’t worry – there are no right or wrong answers, and everyone wins when mamas are informed and empowered. The biggest surprise is how high the toxin score can be, even for products that are labeled “natural” or “organic.” The only way to lower your score is to know what to look for, and there’s a whole tricky business trying to trick busy mamas with unclear labeling. That’s why Earth Mama supports the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011.

Here’s The Action:
The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 needs your support! The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 (H.R.2359) is designed to give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority to ensure that personal care products are free of harmful ingredients and that ingredients are fully disclosed. It’s pretty simple, right? Earth Mama Angel Baby is hoping you’ll use this handy action tool from our friends at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to tell your rep to close the loopholes that allow “cancer-causing chemicals in baby shampoo, hormone disruptors in fragrance and lead in lipstick.”

Enter To Win The Prize:
You can win Earth Mama’s A Little Something for Baby, filled with zero toxin essentials for an angel on the go:
  1. Take the How Low Can You Go challenge
  2. Use the Action Tool to contact your representative
  3. Leave a comment below sharing your score to enter to win A Little Something for Baby (includes naturally safe Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash, best selling, rash busting Angel Baby Bottom Balm, soothing Angel Baby Lotion and pure, virtually scent-free Angel Baby Oil).  Leave your e-mail address in your comment!
  4. LIKE Earth Mama Angel Baby on Facebook (click here) and Toni The Chic Momma on Facebook (click here)
One US winner, who has completed all four steps above, will be selected at random to win the fabulous prize from Earth Mama Angel Baby!  Entries will be accepted until August 26, 2011 at midnight CST.  Good Luck!  Many thanks to Earth Mama Angel Baby!

While awaiting to see if you win this wonderful prize, check out: Mama's Blog, Earth Mama Angel Baby's Facebook Page, Mama Melinda's Twitter Page, Earth Mama Angel Baby's Twitter Page and Mama's Healing Hearts Baby Loss Facebook Page

1st Birthday Bash

Last week, my youngest celebrated his First Birthday!  His first year, for me anyway, went by way too fast.  With my first born, I don't remember time flying by so quickly.  I guess with a toddler and a baby, I was extra busy and just didn't realize how quickly time was elapsing.    For all of you new mommies or soon-to-be mommies, make sure you relish every single moment with your little one.  Before you know it, you'll be celebrating first birthdays.  It's bittersweet because you miss the tiny, little baby, but it's such an absolute joy to watch your little one grow up and discover new things.    OK... let's check out some of the pics from the big day.  Well, first, let's check out some of his newborn pictures!

The above pictures were taken at the hospital.  Pretty adorable for hospital pictures, huh?

So, the birthday party theme was "Jungle Fun!"  That was also the theme for my oldest's first birthday, so we had decorations already!  This year, however, I made the birthday cake and cupcakes from scratch.  My mouth is watering just thinking about the delectable frosting.  Yum yum.  The "smash cake" was store bought as my decorating skills aren't super fancy quite yet!  It was a wonderful celebration and I have throughly enjoyed my little one's first year.  Looking forward to another blessed year!

Running and Raising Money!

It's the season of 5K runs in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  I'm happy to be participating in two 5K's that are very close to my heart.  The first 5K that I'll be participating in is the 2011 Walk To End Alzheimer's on August 27, 2011.

The life of my granny, Sylvia Kelly, was taken by Alzheimer's on July 1st, 1997. My sister, Kasey Lardizabal, and I are stepping up to help end Alzheimer's.  Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.  Please visit my fundraising page to help support my efforts.

The next 5K that I'll be participating in is the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure on September 17, 2011.  I've have been a licensed Realtor in Oklahoma since 2001.  I've worked with several fellow Realtors in the Tulsa-area who are breast cancer survivors.  I'm honored to know such awesome, courageous women.  For more than 25 years, Komen For The Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer; transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease, and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.  I hope you will support my efforts in raising money for the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure!  Please visit my fundraising page!

Thank you for the support!

Boudreaux's Butt Paste Review & Giveaway!

I'm super thrilled to be hosting a Boudreaux's Butt Paste Review and Giveaway!  In the past, I have posted info on many other Boudreaux's Butt Paste Giveaways that I found on Facebook and on other blog sites.  So, I'm very happy to be doing my own now!

As you know, I have used Boudreaux's Butt Paste for my oldest little one.  It's worked like a charm and has helped keep his little bottom diaper rash free!  We have tried a few other products, but have always come back to Boudreaux's Butt Paste.  Boudreaux's has several products besides their coveted Butt Paste products.  They also offer: Boudreaux's Baby Kisses Lip Balm, Boudreaux's Body Wash & Shampoo and Boudreaux's Rash Protector.
So, at the end of July, I received a wonderful box of goodies from Boudreaux's Butt Paste.  Talk about being excited when I opened it!  Boudreaux's was lovely enough to send me:
  • 1- Boudreaux's Butt Paste
  • 1- All Natural Boudreaux's Butt Paste
  • 1- ALL NEW Maximum Strength Boudreaux's Butt Paste
  • 1- Boudreaux's Baby Kisses Lip Balm
  • 1- Boudreaux's Body Wash & Shampoo
  • 1- Boudreaux's Rash Protector
One of my favorite Boudreaux's products is the Rash Protector.  It's sprays a fine mist and is an essential, must-have item for your diaper bag.  It's quick and easy to use for when you're on the go.  The one Boudreaux's product that I had never used was the Boudreaux's Body Wash and Shampoo.  We have been using it at bath time this past week.  It has a pleasant smell and left my boys smelling great!  It makes great bubbles, too!  The Butt Paste line is just fantastic.  It goes on thick and coats well.  If you have a little one with sensitive skin, this is definitely a product for you to try.  You won't be disappointed.  Promise.

So, my love for Boudreaux's Butt Paste continues to grow.  I had the pleasure of trying some new product and trying some of our old favorites.  I love Boudreaux's Butt Paste because it has really helped my oldest's sensitive bottom.  I also love the fact that Boudreaux's Butt Paste is a wonderful, generous company.  Back in May, I began a charitable group.  I created Shower of Hope Oklahoma - Hamil Family as an outreach to the Hamil Family in Cashion, Oklahoma.  The Hamil Family lost their two precious boys from the May 24, 2011 Oklahoma tornadoes.  Catherine Hamil was taking shelter with her three children in the bath tub when the tornado ripped through their home.  Ryan (3) and Cole (15-months) are Heaven's newest angels.  Catherine Hamil is expecting a baby girl in October and has a 5-year old daughter, Cathleen.  As a mommy, upon hearing about the Hamil's tragedy, I just felt stirred and felt led to do something.  I had to act.  I created the Facebook page, Shower of Hope Oklahoma - Hamil Family, and started spreading the word by any means possible.  I reached out to Boudreaux's Butt Paste and they quickly sent a donation to the Hamil Family.  Boudreaux's Butt Paste sent a care package loaded with tons of goodies and products for the Hamil's soon-to-be baby girl.  I love supporting companies who are generous and quick to help others in need.

So, let's give away some goodies!  Boudreaux's Butt Paste is graciously going to send the winner of this giveaway some amazing Boudreaux's goodies!  THANK YOU to Boudreaux's Butt Paste for sponsoring this awesome giveaway!  Visit them at www.buttpaste.com today!

I first heard of the amazing Shari Criso through Patricia Peters the genius behind the Warm Milk Baby Hobo Convertible Diaper Bag.  I then began checking out Shari's 1-Hour Question and Answer on the Earth Mama Angel Baby Facebook page.  After attending two Q & A sessions, I decided to LIKE Shari's Facebook page.  I began to see updates from Shari's page and then saw an update for Shari's Tuesday evening show, My Baby Experts.  After one episode, I was hooked.  Shari is so knowledgeable in all things baby related and every week the topics are so informative.  Each week is filled with awesome tid-bits plus practical, useful information for parents.  The cherry on top, is that Shari's blesses viewers every week with incredible prizes simply by RSVP'ing to her weekly show and attending!  If her weekly prizes aren't fabulous enough, Shari is now giving an IPad2 (or $500 PayPal Cash) to one lucky (oh so lucky) person!  For your chance to win this F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S prize simply pay Mama B a visit on Facebook and click on the IPad 2 (or $500 Cash) Giveaway Tab on the left.  Good luck!
