Cloth Diaper VICTORY!

If you've followed my blog for any length of time now, you know that I cloth diaper my 19-month old.  I began cloth diapering after meeting Jennifer Labit, the owner of Cotton Babies and the creator of Flip, bumGenius and Econobum cloth diapers.  I had coffee with Jennifer and some local cloth diapering moms in August 2011 and have become a lover of the fluff.  A cloth diaper addict.  Wait, this sounds better... a cloth diaper advocate.  Yes, I'm an advocate.  *big grin*  See, after only 7-months of cloth diapering, I'm signed up to host the Tulsa, Oklahoma Great Cloth Diaper Change!  Pretty good for someone who's still kind of "green" when it comes to cloth diapering.  I still consider myself "green" as I just have now begun cloth diapering at night.

So, that's where the "victory" comes into play.  See, cloth diapering during the day time has been a breeze from the get-go.  Nap time and bed time were a different story though.  When my little one first started wearing cloth diapers, it took some adjusting.  I mean, his bottom was pretty "fluffy" with a cloth diaper.  Nap time was a struggle because I think he felt a little uncomfortable with so much "fluff."  Bed time didn't work as the microfiber inserts just couldn't hold all of the urine.  Both of my boys are heavy wetters and for last 7-months I would use a disposable at night instead of cloth.  I've really been wanting to cloth diaper at night, so I purchased 2 Thirsties hemp inserts.  I was recently sent an overnight fleece diaper cover from Londonware to review.  Speaking of review, I'll be posting my Londonware review and giveaway on May 1st and it will be a part of a Mother's Day Blog Hop!  So, last night was the first night that I used the hemp insert/fleece diaper cover combo.  I put my little one in a bumGenius 4.0 pocket diaper and used 2 of the Thirsties hemp inserts.  I put the Londonware fleece cover over the diaper and into my little one's Halo Sleep Blanket he went.  I have to admit, I was a little nervous.  I kept thinking, "I sure hope he doesn't leak out at 3am.  Please, God, let this diapering combo WORK!"

Anyhow, my little one went to bed last night at 8:15pm and slept until 8:30am!  When I went to get my little one out of his crib this morning, his sleep blanket was dry.  Yes!  I removed the sleep blanket and his pj's were dry!  YES!  My little one had leaked out a little bit, but the Londonware diaper cover kept anything from leaking out onto his pj's and sleep blanket!  VICTORY!

I'm super excited to have found an overnight cloth diapering solution that worked for us.  It felt like a victory for me.  But, hey, it's the small things, right?  I'm curious, if you cloth diaper, what kind of bed time solution has worked for you?

Funky Friday - Manic Mommy Monday #4

Manic Mommy Monday!

I'm joining The Gnome's Mom for "Manic Mommy Monday!" This is the fourth week and while there are no weekly topics so to speak, it's a fun way to re-cap on your weekend, give an update on your life or anything else you feel led to "talk" or blog about on Monday! If you're so inclined, join us fellow "Manic Mommas," link-up and join the fun!

So, this is the 4th Manic Mommy Monday.  Last week, I blogged about my Freaky Friday.  This week, I'm going to blog about this past Friday, which I'll refer to as "Funky Friday."  Why?  Well, it was full of funk.  And boy, do I mean funk.  Yucky, awful funk.

My soon-to-be 3-year old is potty training.  He does pretty awesome during the day and will stay dry.  I take him to the bath room often during the day and he will use the potty chair.  At night, he remains dry and will use the bath room first thing in the morning.  Pretty good, huh?  Well number 2's are a completely different story.

My toddler was on spring break last week.  My toddler is almost 3, but it seems funny that he had a spring break and was off from pre-school.  Anyhow, after breakfast on Friday, rather then heading out to drop my oldest toddler off at pre-school, we remained home instead and planned on enjoying a lazy morning.  The boys were in the living room playing and I decided to have a bowl of cereal in the kitchen.   Ahhh, some "free" time to enjoy breakfast.  The breakfast room opens to the living room and I can see most of the room from the breakfast table.  Everything seemed to be normal.  Everything sounded normal.  Until, BAM.  I smelled something.  I immediately dropped my spoon in my cereal bowl and jumped (yes, jumped) the baby gate into the living room.

My toddlers have a Step2 playhouse that we keep indoors and is in our living room.  My toddler stood at the door way of the playhouse with a brown funky gunk all over his hands.  Oh.  No.  What has he done?  My toddler still had his diaper and pants on, so I decided to peer in the playhouse.  Aha.  He had been doing some "painting."  Some of the contents from his dirty diaper were painted on the inside wall of the playhouse.  Now, this isn't the first "painting" experience that I've had with my toddler.  I've actually had a much worse experience with "finger painting" back in the summer.  This "finger painting" exhibition was a close second though.  All-and-all, the clean-up took about 30 minutes.  A long 30 minutes, I might add.  *sigh*  Who knew parenthood was so messy?

So, my Friday was a little funky.  How was your Friday?

Let's Talk Diaper Cream.

Whether you use cloth diapers or disposables diapers, at some point you've used a diaper cream.  Some parents only use a diaper cream when their little one has a diaper rash.  However, I'm one of the parents who use a diaper cream at every diaper change.  My oldest has extremely sensitive skin and I learned quickly that using a diaper cream at every diaper change was necessary with him.  Coating his little bottom at every diaper change acted as a diaper rash preventive.  So, I was recently asked if I had a favorite diaper rash cream/ointment.  Truth is, I don't have a favorite.  I  have several favorites!  I'm going to share with you some of my favorite diaper creams that are regularly stocked in my arsenal of diaper creams/balms/ointments that work great for cloth diapers and even disposable diapers!

The first cloth diaper safe diaper ointment that I used was the GroVia Magic Stick.  I purchased it from my local cloth diaper store, Booty Duty Cloth Diapers.  The one thing that I absolutely loved about the GroVia Magic Stick is the "stick" form.  When using it at diaper changes, you can keep your hands clean while applying the  diaper balm.  It's super easy to use and goes on quite smoothly.  I primarily keep the GroVia Magic Stick in the diaper bag for easy cloth diaper changes on-the-go.  Organic, and petroleum-free, it's a wonderful cloth diaper safe diaper ointment!  GroVia Magic Stick comes in a 2 oz. "stick" applicator and is available at www.gro-via.com.

Earth Mama Angel Baby has a fabulous diaper ointment called. Angel Baby Bottom Balm. First off, Angel Baby Bottom Balm scores a big fat ZERO on the EWG Skin Deep Data Base.   Second, Angel Baby Bottom Balm is cloth diaper safe.  When I began cloth diapering my youngest 7 months ago, I quickly learned that not all diaper creams are created equal.  Some diaper creams are cloth diaper safe and others are not.  Thirdly, Angel Baby Bottom Balm is more then a diaper cream as it also helps treat thrush and is a great first aid salve.  Last summer, I was viciously attacked by a pack of hungry mosquitoes. They must have thought my legs were crème brûlée because they nearly devoured my pour legs!   I'm highly allergic to mosquito bites and the bites quickly whelped up, turned red and began to itch horribly.   I used Angel Baby Bottom Balm to help treat my mosquito bites and it brought me some much needed relief!  Angel Baby Bottom Balm is available at select retailers nationwide.  Click here to search for an Earth Mama Angel Baby retailer near you.  Angel Baby Bottom Balm comes in two sizes:  30 ml.(1 oz.) for $9.95 or 60 ml.(2 oz.) for $14.95.

Another cloth diaper safe diaper cream I have been using is Sweet Knee Bun Glaze.   Sweet Knee Bun Glaze also scores a ZERO on the EWG Skin Deep Data Base.   The Bun Glaze smells yummy and actually reminds me of the glaze I make for rum cake!  I especially like the Bun Glaze because it's a keep-your-hands-free application.  You simply pump the desired amount onto your little one's fluffy bottom and you're good-to-go.  That easy application makes Bun Glaze an ideal choice for when you're out-and-about with your little one.  You don't have to worry about having a mess on your hands... literally.  Bun Glaze is available at www.sweetknee.com.  Bun Glaze is available in a 1.6 oz bottle for $7.95 and a 3.2 oz. bottle for $12.95.

Another cloth diaper safe diaper cream that's also a "thrush buster" is Diaper Rash and Thrush by Motherlove Herbal Company. Motherlove's diaper cream also scores a ZERO on the EWG Skin Deep Data Base.  When using Diaper Rash and Thrush, you will notice that a little goes a long way.   There's no need to "glop" it on your little one's bottom, which definitely saves you some green.   Diaper Rash and Thrush has a pleasant smell, too.   It's not overpowering and has a light, clean aroma.  Bonus... If you're a nursing momma, Diaper Rash and Thrush can actually be used on your nipples as a soothing salve.  Diaper Rash and Thrush is available in a 1 oz. jar for $9.95.  Click here to find a retailer near you or you can order at www.motherlove.com.

The latest diaper cream that I've been using is Ouchie Diaper Balm from Nassim Naturals.    While not yet rated on the EWG Skin Deep Data Base, Ouchie Diaper Balm is made from the finest, natural ingredients.   The Ouchie Diaper Balm comes in a circular container and one of my favorite features is how compact the container is.  The container size is perfect for your diaper bag as it takes up little space.  The smell is pleasant and I love the natural chamomile, lavender and myrrh.  It's a cloth diaper safe ointment with a smooth texture and glides on quite nicely.  Ouchie Diaper Balm is available in a 2 fl. oz./60 ml. container for $14.00.  Visit www.nassimnaturals.com to order!

Another product I've used is Boudreaux's Rash Protector Spray.  This convenient spray is great for diapering on-the-go and is a must-have for the diaper bag.  I, however, have only used this product with disposable diapers as I don't believe the Peruvian Balsam is cloth diaper safe.  The clear, continuous spray makes applying Boudreaux's Rash Protector Spray quick and easy.  Boudreaux's Protector Spray comes in a 2 oz. bottle and retails for $5.99 and is available at many retailers nationwide such as Babies 'R Us, Buy Buy Baby and Walmart.

I hope you've found this posting helpful!  There are many wonderful diaper creams, balms and ointments on the market and the above are simply my favorites.  So, now that you know my favorites, what are your favorite go-to diaper creams?

Forget Manic Monday, How About Freaky Friday?!

Manic Mommy Monday!

I'm joining The Gnome's Mom for "Manic Mommy Monday!"  This is the third week and while there are no weekly topics so to speak, it's a fun way to re-cap on your weekend, give an update on your life or anything else you feel led to "talk" or blog about on Monday!   If you're so inclined, join us fellow "Manic Mommas," link-up and join the fun!

So, this past Friday started out like any other Friday.  I woke up, showered, ate breakfast.  The boys were then up, so I got their diapers changed, clothed them and fed them breakfast.  Nothing super exciting, just our normal routine.  Little did I know that this Friday would be far from ordinary...

After everyone was ready, we headed out the door to take my oldest to pre-school.  After I dropped him off, my youngest and I headed to run a few morning errands.  The first stop was to The Little Gym.  I'm hosting Tulsa's Great Cloth Diaper Change event this April and The Little Gym had donated a giveaway prize plus some goodies for the "swag bags."  After The Little Gym stop, we headed to a local ultrasound studio to pick up some coupons for the "swag bags."  Morning errands were so far, so good.  Smooth.  No drama.  No tantrums.  Nothing freaky... yet.

Next stop was Babies 'R Us to pick up a baby shower gift.  Just a block East of Babies 'R Us is Krispy Kreme.  Yum.  Well, I couldn't help it.  That "HOT" sign was on and I just had to go through the drive-thru window and get a doughnut.  With yummy deliciousness in hand, I headed to Babies 'R Us.  To avoid traffic, I took a side street that would take me behind the Babies R' Us and loop me around to the front of the store.  As I made the right-hand turn, there were two vehicles in front of me: A red truck and a brown car.  The red truck was going around the brown car.  Then, all of a sudden, the brown car came to a complete stop in the middle of the road.  The driver jumped out of his car and lifted up his t-shirt and hoody to reveal a GUN.  Yes, a GUN!  The driver reached for the gun.  He attempted to pull it out, but with the red truck speeding off too quickly, the man put the gun back in his pants.

Of course, with the brown car in the middle of the road, I just sat a complete stop.  I was shocked.  Oh.My.Gosh.  Was I about to witness something really terrible happen?  What if I did witness a crime?  Then what?  This incident lasted only a matter of seconds, but my head was racing with so many "what if's."

The red truck peeled into an apartment complex.  I could hear the tires squealing.  The driver of the brown car then jumped back into his car.  You could tell he was ticked off.  He was mad, angry and just fuming.  Rather then follow the red truck, he sped off, rolled down his window and flipped the driver of the red truck the bird.

All the while, I sat in my car and pushed my jaw up from the floor.  Wow.  Just wow.  I couldn't believe what I had just witnessed.  I turned into Babies 'R Us and just sat in the car for a few minutes.  I was so thankful that nothing bad had happened.  That incident could have easily turned into something ugly and tragic.  I could have been the witness to a shooting had the driver of the brown car had a better opportunity.  I was thankful for the hedge of protection around me that day, and that nothing more serious happened.  Then, I noticed something.  That Krispy Kreme doughnut was still in my hand.  I took a bite.  The doughnut was still hot.  It tasted so good, and quickly turned a sour moment into a sweet one.

So, my Friday was a little Freaky.  How was your Friday?

Happy Blogging,
Toni The Chic Momma

ecoSTORE USA Review

I was recently introduced to a wonderful company, ecoSTORE USA.  ecoSTORE USA carries a variety of eco friendly products.  From household, to baby and pet care, there are many products for you to choose to fit your lifestyle and family's needs.

If you're unfamiliar with ecoSTORE, let me bring you up to speed.  Here's their backstory from www.ecostoreusa.com: Malcolm and Melanie Rands founded ecoSTORE over 18 years ago, in a permaculture eco-village in Northland, New Zealand.  Their team began to create a range of plant and mineral based cleaning products without dangerous and toxic chemicals. People started using them and loved that they worked so well and that certain health conditions were disappearing.  Now, years later, ecostore has grown into an international brand with a proven track record, a pedigree heritage and a superior product offering sold throughout NZ, Australia, the USA, and five Asian countries.

So, I've also had the opportunity to try some of ecoSTORE USA's NEWEST products!  They have just launched a hair care line of shampoos and conditioners that are just amazing.  With delicious scents like Pear, Honey Almond and Cucumber there's something to delight everyone's senses and make your showers and baths even more indulgent.

The new hair care line is formulated to moisturize and volumize your hair and is also color-safe.  According to www.ecostoreusa.com, the new shampoos and conditioners are plant and mineral-based formulations with select natural oil ingredients to gently cleanse, soften and replenish hair without removing its natural protective oils.  ecoSTORE USA's new hair care line is also eco friendly and contains no harmful, yucky, nasty chemicals!  The shampoos and conditioners are sulfate free, paraben free, 1,4 dioxane free and contain no artificial dyes or fragrances.
I tried the Honey Almond Shampoo and Conditioner.  First, I absolutely love the scent.  It's light and soft, yet extremely pleasing.  I have about shoulder length hair.  My hair is pretty fine in texture, but with the current length, it's fairly thick.  I used a dollop of shampoo a little larger then a quarter and it seemed like a good amount to lather and work through my hair evenly.  I used the same amount for the conditioner as well.  After towel drying my hair, my brush seemed to easily, well for the most part, go through my hair without too much trouble.  I say, "for the most part," as my hair has been exceptionally "tangly" hair ever since having my little ones.  One day, I let my hair air-dry and then another day, I dried my hair with a blow dryer.  Both drying techniques resulted in the same outcome: My hair was soft and I didn't notice much frizz.  I have naturally wavy hair and tend to get fly-aways and frizz, but didn't notice that as bad when using the ecoSTORE USA shampoo and conditioner.  Bottom line: I loved this product and it worked well for me.

If you would like to try ecoSTORE USA's newest hair care products, you're in luck!  You can purchase the new shampoos and conditioners as they are on sale right now!  All of the shampoos and conditioners are 20% off through March 17th at the ecoSTORE USA web site: www.ecostoreusa.com.  If you follow ecoSTORE USA on Facebook, you actually have an opportunity to win a fabulous gift basket filled with each of the new hair care line products!  Each week in March, ecoSTORE USA will be giving away one of these fabulous gift baskets!  So, follow ecoSTORE USA on Facebook and follow them on Twitter (@ecostoreusa) for all of the latest and greatest news and promotions from ecoSTORE USA!

Happy Blogging!

P.S. - ecoSTORE USA graciously sent me their amazing products for this review.  However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are 100% mine.  My two cents.

This Monday Is About Praise - Manic Mommy Monday 2

I'm joining The Gnome's Mom for "Manic Mommy Monday!"   This is the second week and while there are no weekly topics so to speak, it's a fun way to re-cap on your weekend, give an update on your life or anything else you feel led to "talk" or blog about on Monday!  If you're so inclined, join us fellow "Manic Mommas," link-up and join the fun!

While most Mondays can tend to be a bit "manic," today I'm making my Monday about praise.  I'm making my Monday about peace.  I'm making my Monday about thankfulness...

On Saturday, February 25th, I was spending the morning at home with my boys.  My husband was working, so the boys and I were having a lazy Saturday watching cartoons, playing with cars, trucks and virtually anything else with wheels.  I was chatting with my mom on the phone, when my dad's wife called.  I never talk with my dad's wife on the phone, so if she calls, there's usually something wrong or amiss.  I clicked over.

"Toni?" she asked.  "Hey, Debbie.  What's up?" I replied.  "Well, your dad is in the ER with chest pains and shortness of breath," she said.  Her voice was shaking and I could tell that she was on the verge of crying.

I usually tend to be the calm one in the bunch when dealing with tough situations, so I steadied my voice and asked for any details that she could offer me.  After finishing on the phone with Debbie, I immediately called my mom back to let her know what was going on with my dad so that she could get in touch with my younger sister.  My husband returned home about an hour later to watch the boys so that I could head up to the hospital to be with my family.

My sister, my dad and me (Toni The Chic Momma).

The whole drive to the hospital, I prayed for my dad.  See, this was the third "scare" that my dad had in the last few years.  In the summer of 2007, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer.  It was a difficult time and as the word "cancer" can literally shake you to your core.  My dad had surgery to remove his prostate in November 2007 and did remarkably well.  He did have some complications with his bladder after the surgery, but was blessed to not have to endure chemo or radiation.  Then in February 2010, my dad was hospitalized with a blood clot in his lung.  My dad's kidneys were also in pretty bad shape, too.  It was about a 2-week hospital stay with countless tests, procedures and loads of medicine.  And then two years later, here we were again back in the hospital.

The doctors said that my dad was being treated for a heart attack.  With the history of past blood clots, the doctors performed a scan to look for more blood clots in his legs.  While there were no additional blood clots found, the scan did show a large tumor/mass (about the size of a lemon) in my dad's liver.  A second scan was done and focused on the liver.  However, the results were inconclusive and the doctors wanted to perform a biopsy.  This was a risky procedure as my dad was on blood thinners and there was a risk of increased bleeding.  There was a sense of urgency from the doctors and so my dad proceeded with the biopsy.

After a 9-day stay in the hospital, my dad was able to return home, on Monday, March 5th.  He was absolutely thrilled, yet was naturally a little anxious about the biopsy results that were due on March 7th.

I have to say that during my dad's hospital stay and the various ups-and-downs, I remained extremely calm, peaceful.  No tears were ever shed.  I'm a Christian and the strength of my faith was tested during that time.  While bad news and reports tried to get me down, I stood my ground and said, "my dad doesn't have cancer."  My dad's wife seemed to immediately go to the worse case scenario and I remember emphatically telling her, "my dad doesn't have cancer."  It rolled so easily off my tongue because I really believed it.

On March 7th, I received a phone call from my dad.  He had just met with his primary care doctor who had the results of the biopsy.  My phone rang around 12:20pm.  It was my dad.  "Hey, Toni.  I just wanted to call and let you know how things went this morning," my dad said.  He continued, "I wanted to share the good news with you.  I don't have cancer."  I, of course, was thrilled, over the moon, excited.  I could hear the relief in my dad's voice.  I could hear the victory.  No cancer.

After I hung up with my dad, the flood gates burst.  Up until then, I had been the calm, cool, collected, peaceful, positive one.  I was standing strong in my faith, unwavering to all that was going on around me.  Yet, upon hearing the glorious news, I cried my eyes out and could no longer hold anything back.  It felt like a huge weight was lifted from me.  I could finally let everything come flooding out.  I praised God for His faithfulness...  "With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation" (Psalm 91:16).

I want to also thank those of you who follow my blog and Facebook page for your thoughts and prayer during that time.  Your kind words and encouragement meant the world to me.  Thank you!

So, this Monday is about praise for me.  I'm making my Monday about peace.  I'm making my Monday about thankfulness.  What will this Monday be for you?

Happy Blogging!

It's Just Another Manic Monday...

I'm joining The Gnome's Mom for "Manic Mommy Monday!"  This is the first week and while there are no weekly topics so to speak, this week is a "getting-to-know-you" of sorts.   If you're so inclined, join us fellow "Manic Mommas," link-up and join the fun!

So, with further ado... Manic Mommy Monday Week 1...

I'm a a wife and mommy. I live in Oklahoma with my husband  and our two little boys.   With two little boys only 15-months apart, life is busy and exhausting, but oh so exciting.  I'm also a licensed Realtor in Oklahoma, but for the past year have been a stay-at-home mom.   I've been cloth diapering my 19-month old for 7 months now, so I've been chronicling my fluffy adventures in my blog!  I have loved cloth diapering and was actually featured as the January 2012 DiaperShops.com "Spotlight Mom."  I have a small charitable group Shower of Hope Oklahoma.  I also created Shower of Hope Oklahoma - Hamil Family.  My dream and goal is to one day turn my charitable group into a full-fledged 501(C)(3) charitable organization.

Until next time...

Happy Blogging!
